We finished the recording to all drums yesterday and it was an amazing process, first the development of the ideas and the search for the real meanings of what we wanted to say on each song, second the way we know each other now, much deeper than ever before, we are definately a better and stronger band today.
The drum tracks are solid and full of energy, most of the songs were done in one take, just a very few edits. Ross don’t like to record with a metronome for the drummer, everything is very open and free, we weren’t locked to any advice but the pulse of Eloy on the drums, so powerful!
At this moment when I write my test at the control room, Ross and Eloy are listening to all the tracks to make sure we have the best takes, only after that I will start to mess with the guitars and amps. The idea is that on the guitar recording breaks Derrick would start shouting some lyrics, his mic is at the centre of the living room facing the ocean, it’s a beautiful view that will inspire his performance.
Originally we had 13 songs to record plus the 2 covers but after we went trough song by song with Ross we have decided to cut 3 songs for the album, they weren’t really ready enough to be a part of it and we didn’t bother to record the drums for them. The songs that were out had the nicknames Xisto-Riff, Fu-Riff and Arrastada. We might work on these songs for a future album but right now they are out of the project.
We had a nice surprise at the studio last Saturday when we were visited by Chuck Johnson, the engineer that worked with Ross on Roots, he is one of the creators of the sound of that album, specially on tuning the drums, very methodic and perfect, it took a long time for each song which drove Ross a little crazy but at the end the sound was awesome. It is the same process we are doing now but this time with Mike Balboa as the engineer, really great ears to tune the drums. Chuck left the music business a while ago, it was really nice to see him again after so long. He worked on many albums at the Indigo Ranch studios with Ross.
The studio was sold about ten years ago and soon after that he was burned down in one of those huge Californian fires, it was a beautiful place and is really sad not to have such a special studio around. Ross got some equipment from the studio when the owner sold all his stuff, including the mic that we are going to use to record Derrick’s voice, an amazing Telefunken ELAM 251 that was used by many legends including Tony Bennett, Corey Taylor, Johnatan Davies and it’s the same mic that Max Cavalera used to record Roots, a real piece of history!
Eloy did an amazing job on performing the drums, he is a smart kid with a huge talent, one of the best drummers in the world, according to Ross the best drummer he ever worked with, without a doubt a huge compliment.
Now is mine turn, find the sound and lay down the tracks, can’t wait to destroy everything.
I will keep you all posted, thanks for all the good feedback we are receiving trough your comments, it’s really motivating for us. Till next report, DESTROY!!
